چکیده

We investigated how talker variability impacts novel phonological pattern learning in 4and 11-month-olds. Both age groups were better able to discriminate between legal and illegal phonotactic strings after exposure to multiple talkers than a single talker. It is argued that these data may be best accounted for by hybrid models including linguistic representations that abstract from talker identity, provided that neither a lexicon nor a protolexicon are necessary to allow the separation of the two. Effects of prior phonotactic knowledge on infant word segmentation: the case of nonadjacent dependencies.

PURPOSE In this study, the authors explored whether French-learning infants use nonadjacent phonotactic regularities in their native language, which they learn between the ages of 7 and 10 months, to segment words from fluent speech. METHOD Two groups of 20 French-learning infants were tested using the head-turn preference procedure at 10 and 13 months of age. In Experiment 1, infants were fa...

Speech perception by infants: categorization based on nasal consonant place of articulation.

This study examined the ability of six-month-old infants to recognize the perceptual similarity of syllables sharing a phonetic segment when variations were introduced in phonetic environment and talker. Infants in a "phonetic" group were visually reinforced for head turns when a change occurred from a background category of labial nasals to a comparison category of alveolar nasals . The infant...

A “Bat” Is Easier to Learn than a “Tab”: Effects of Relative Phonotactic Frequency on Infant Word Learning

Many studies have shown that during the first year of life infants start learning the prosodic, phonetic and phonotactic properties of their native language. In parallel, infants start associating sound sequences with semantic representations. However, the question of how these two processes interact remains largely unknown. The current study explores whether (and when) the relative phonotactic...

Running Head: ADULT WORD LEARNING Differentiating phonotactic probability and neighborhood density in adult word learning

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to differentiate effects of phonotactic probability, the likelihood of occurrence of a sound sequence, and neighborhood density, the number of words that sound similar to a given word, on adult word learning. A second purpose was to determine what aspect of word learning, namely triggering learning, formation of an initial representation, or integration wi...

The effects of talker variability and variances on incidental learning of lexical tones

Multi-talker variability has been found to be very effective in the perception and production training of nonnative sound categories in the past few decades. The phonetic training paradigms were mostly explicit learning in which learners received feedback of the categories when exposed to the training stimuli. More recently, studies have started to investigate how auditory categories are learne...
